Electricity and Fire begins with a refresher course on electrical theory, with additional instruction on electrical testing. Instructors will provide demonstrations on each of several electrical devices, including circuit breaker panels, ground fault interrupters (GFI), arc fault interrupters (AFI), switches, outlets, thermal cut-offs, thermostats, and other electrical devices within The Interactive Laboratory. Structural electrical service is also covered, including basic review of aerial and underground service entrances, meters, and disconnects. Examination and demonstrations will be provided on both working electrical appliances and malfunctioned appliances. Items encountered in the field, including electric stoves, dishwashers, space heaters, hair dryers, and coffee makers, are available in the interactive laboratory, as well as examples of different types of new and older models of wiring and connectors. Though electrical codes differ vastly from area to area, The Institute provides instruction on basic code requirements and assists students in navigating the maze of local codes as well as The National Electric Code (NEC). Students will be walked through the steps of a basic electrical fire investigation, including making accurate determinations, guided by experienced investigators. Certificates will be issued to students who have successfully completed the course.
